How To Get The Most From Your Doctor (Information from a video by Dr. Rob Rutledge and the K/G LWCSG members)

A Kingston/Greenwood Nova Scotia Unit “Living with Cancer” Support Group Guide on HOW TO GET THE MOST FROM YOUR DOCTOR

BEFORE YOUR VISIT:

  • List symptoms and medications; keep a record of your general health history, phone numbers, etc.
  • Carry a card in wallet/purse with record of surgeries.
  • Ask a family member or friend to accompany you.
  • Write down questions to ask the doctor, no question is too trivial.
  • Make sure your primary doctor passes on ALL your records to your oncologist.
  • CALL AND CONFIRM YOUR APPOINTMENT, be sure to take x-rays and ask what you need.

AT THE DOCTOR’S OFFICE

  • Be honest and open.
  • If feeling overwhelmed—say so.
  • Ask the most important questions first.
  • Take notes and clarify.
  • ASK “When can I expect to hear from you” and call if you don’t hear in a reasonable time.

AFTER THE VISIT

  • KEEP A JOURNAL (time, place, feelings, names, phone numbers etc.)
  • Assess what you’ve learned.
  • Plan what to do if you have side affects (What is normal? When should I worry?)
  • KNOW WHO TO CALL  (name & phone number)
  • Don’t wait too long for a return call.

PROBLEMS WITH A DOCTOR?

  • Bring your spouse, a family member or friend
  • for visits.
  • Call your doctor to clarify ANY points, or ask for an appointment.
  • Be sure—be comfortable with your doctor.
  • Ask for a second opinion.
  • REMEMBER: The doctor is there to serve YOU.  It’s OK to be the squeaky wheel.
