While it is always a joy to review a book that I feel will benefit breast cancer patients and their family/friends, it is even more of a joy to review a book that has been written by someone from the Atlantic Region. “Why Me? Surviving, Coping, Living with Breast Cancer” is written by our very own Dr. Roger Roberge, a general surgeon from Moncton, New Brunswick.
Dr. Roberge is a much loved doctor who specializes in the care of people with breast cancer, and who has served and still serves on many committees and advisory boards. Over the last 30 years, patients have come to his office knowing they will get answers to their many questions. This book is his gift of advice to everyone. His words of wisdom come from his experience with patients and discussions with colleagues. "Why Me?” is an easy read and can be finished in one day and/or read many times again. Each left-hand page is a quote from a patient/survivor. Each right-hand page contains the many questions patients ask, followed by the doctor’s answers.
Right from the beginning Dr. Roberge reassures that you are not to blame for getting breast cancer. He recognizes the state of shock most patients are in when a diagnosis of breast cancer is confirmed, so his answers are kept uncomplicated. When he explains what breast cancer is, and what treatment options there are, he uses diagrams to further illustrate information. The book covers options, surgery, reconstructive surgery, physical and psychological issues, follow-up, genetics, and alternative therapies.
Breast cancer awareness is also a very important subject in Dr. Roberge’s book. He talks about risk factors and has included a mini CD-R Breast Self-Examination Guide.
