Central Newfoundland Cancer Survivors' Choir
By Jackie Thompson
Mar 3, 2004
The Grand Falls-Windsor Newfoundland Unit of the Canadian Cancer Society has had a long history of commitment to the fight against cancer. With the help of a hardworking office staff partnering with many organizations within the community and dedicated volunteers, the Canadian Cancer Society offers support services to patients, family, and friends who are affected by this disease.
In the year 2000, after much thought and discussion, one such support service was begun by the vision of a long-time volunteer, Carmelita Pittman and the staff office coordinator Jackie Thompson. It was in June of that year that the Central Newfoundland Cancer Survivors Choir had their first performance at a National Cancer Survivors Day church service, held at the United Church in Grand Falls-Windsor. The choir consisted of 24 members with Conductor Glenn Mouland and Accompanist, Beverly Jones.
The original intent was to have the choir perform this one time, but the choir was very well received by the audience and the community. In addition, the choir members enjoyed the singing, the fellowship, and the emotional and spiritual support so much that rehearsals are continuing to this day. Since then, rehearsals take place at the United Church on Thursday evenings from 7:30 to 8:30 p.m. New members are welcome.
This inspirational group of men and women have performed at many events throughout the area including local church services, the Breast Cancer Retreat, Funerals, Relay, for Life and local events for the Canadian Cancer Society. The Central Newfoundland Cancer Survivor Choir is a living testament to the power of music and the human spirit.
