Community Focus
Enfield, situated between Dartmouth and Truro, is one of the communities in Nova Scotia that is 'near' the city, but far enough away to provide a close-knit country lifestyle. At the hub of Enfield is the Enfield Home Hardware Building Centre on Highway #2 (http://www.enfieldhardware.com/). Enfield Home Hardware has long been a supporter of Breast Cancer Action Nova Scotia. Involvment began by helping BCANS refurbish their new office location with ceramic tiles and paint. Then Holly Probert, Senior Assistant Manager, started the Pink Ribbon Ladies Night Out in 2006, in support of BCANS. A second event was held in 2008. The two events raised $2342.17.
When Enfield Home Hardware throws an event they put their hearts into it. Women pack the store for the Ladies Night Out, staff work at the play stations with with carnival enthusiasm, food sampling is in abundance, and shopping deals abound through this huge store. In short, it's a party environment! A lot of work and imagination goes into holding an event at the store, and BCANS appreciates all that the Enfield Home Hardware staff do.
But it doesn't stop there. Over the years we've created a wonderful relationship with Holly Probert, Senior Assistant Manager and Randy VanZeumeren, Home Install Manager. Both have attended our annual Bustin'Out Celebration of Spring dinner, dance, and auction and the store has donated items for the auctions. In 2009, Reg Hurshman, Assistant Manager, contacted BCANS with more fund raising ideas. On Saturday, May 16th a fundraising BBQ took place at the store. Enfield Home Hardware donated all food and disposable items for the BBQ. The smell of hotdogs and Italian sausages could be smelt for miles around and it drew people in all day. The BBQ raised $478.92. As we sold hotdogs and sausages and chatted it was easy to see how supportive Enfield people are. Some people just wanted to donate and handed us money. We also got to know another valuable member of the Enfield Home Hardware team, Yvonne Phalen.
Reg Hurshman then planned, Tunes in the Corridor, for Sunday, June 7,2009 at the Enfield Fire Hall. This was an evening of musical entertainment, featuring local talent, including J.D.Clarke, a local singer/ songwriter who is getting a lot of airplay on radio stations, and is a recent double ECMA nominee, along with guitarist Johnny Rock. The MC was Jim Hamilton, who has organized talent for the Nine Mile River Country Music Shows for over 40 years, and is himself a member on the Nova Scotia Country Music Hall of Fame. The evening raised $625.
There is a lot of heart and talent in Enfield and the entire Corridor. BCANS is very appreciative and ever curious about what they will come up with next.
