Stealing Second Base by Lillie Shockney, RN, BS, MAS

Stealing Second Base is an autobiography written by Lillie Shockney, closely detailing her experience with breast cancer. Shockney was an Oncology Nurse before her diagnosis and is currently the Administrative Director of the Johns Hopkins Avon Foundation Breast Center located in Baltimore, Maryland. Shockney views breast cancer from many different perspectives, which she outlines with honesty and humour. Along with following Shockney's own story, the reader will gain important information on diagnosis, treatment, surgery, sexuality and reconstruction through Shockney's reactions and choices as a medical professional. In spite of the heavy subject matter, the book is light in tone, with many funny antidotes to make you smile, making this another great read in the breast cancer memoir genre.

Voices of Lymphedema: Stories, Advice, and Inspiration from Patients and Therapists edited by Ann Ehrlich and Elizabeth McMahon, PhD

This book is a compilation of inspiring personal stories, advice, and solutions to common problems faced by lymphedema patients. The vast amount of information is divided into helpful chapters such as "Travel," "Self-Care Tips," "Humor Helps," and "Support Groups," among others. The combination of patient stories and information from health care professionals creates a perfect balance of personal narratives.  For example, the anonymous contributor who has lived with lymphedema for 71 years [pg. 35]) combined with practical advice such as "Wear sunscreen and insect repellent. Sunburn can damage the delicate skin and an insect bite can lead to a serious infection requiring treatment with antibiotics." [pg. 98] This book would be a great resource for anybody looking for information and support who live with lymphedema.

Hair for Mama by Kelly A. Tinkham, illustrated by Amy June Bates

 

Hair for Mama is a beautifully illustrated book for children and their families on the topic of hair loss due to chemotherapy. Tinkham, the author, had the idea for this book when she herself had to explain to her five year old son that she had cancer and would lose her hair. In the story, eight year old Marcus tries to find hair for his mother thinking it will make her better. Although he is unsuccessful, Marcus learns at the end that "Hair is nice to have. But not as nice as me having Mama and Mama having me." A wonderfully told story with beautiful colour illustrations, and a happy yet realistic ending make this title a great pick as an aide for helping to ease a child's worries when dealing with such a difficult subject matter as a parent having cancer.
