If you know anyone who needs their spirits lifted, the Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation (CBCF)-Atlantic Chapter has an antidote.
Back by popular demand, the CBCF-Atlantic Chapter has produced Rise & Shine Volume 2, a 5”x5” collection of 180 inspirational quotes. The quotes are printed individually on loose paper so that they can be slipped in a card or framed for a friend or family member who needs a little inspiration. Rise & Shine Volume 2 is available at CBCF offices across Canada. In 2001, Rise & Shine Volume 1 was available only in Atlantic Canada and all 5,000 copies sold out in one year.
The story behind Rise & Shine
On April 20, 1998, Bertha Etter and her husband Wayne Fiander learned she had breast cancer. As Bertha tried to absorb the fact and face her surgery, Wayne like many spouses felt helpless. “I felt the very center of our lives was threatened. Bertha was going to get medical help, but I didn’t know what I could do,” he said.
Wayne turned to his love for quotations to give his wife a needed inspirational lift. Bertha’s chemotherapy began on June 10th and so did the quotes, always left on the breakfast table to begin each day of her 180 days of treatments.
“The quotes were a bright spot in my day. They served as a counter measure to the dreadful reality I was dealing with. Some of them are still up on my mirror, even now. One can always use some motivation,” said Bertha.
After Bertha finished her treatments, she and Wayne generously shared their private collection of quotes with the CBCF-Atlantic Chapter as a way to raise funds for Atlantic breast cancer Research and Community Health projects.
“You know, I used to think that people like Winston Churchill were my heroes, but I’ve changed my view. It’s the people who serve and protect ... the people who work on the cancer wards ... the nurses, doctors, and pharmacists ... the women who are fighting breast cancer…they’re my heroes now,” said Wayne.
Rise & Shine sells for $15 each (tax included) and is available by phoning the CBCF-Atlantic Chapter office at 422-5520 or toll free 1-866-273-2223 option 1.
Breast cancer continues to be the most frequently diagnosed cancer among Atlantic Canadian women. In 2006, approximately 1,690 Atlantic Canadian women will be diagnosed.
Funds raised through projects such as this and the annual Canadian Breast Cancer Foundation CIBC Run for the Cure, have enabled the CBCF-Atlantic Chapter to award over $8 million for Research projects and Community Health projects right here in Atlantic Canada. For more information on the granting process or for a list of funded projects, contact the CBCF-Atlantic Chapter office.
